Environmental Daily Advisor Week in Review--December 30, 2013, to January 3, 2014

Last week, the Environmental Daily Advisor discussed climate change adaptation, EPA and OSHA enforcement partnership, and area source boilers.

Here's the Environmental Daily Advisor week in review.

EPA Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plans--The threat of climate change is now a recognized reality impacting environmental compliance at every level. In November 2013 the EPA issued 17 draft Climate Change Adaptation and Implementation Plans for seven national programs and all 10 Regions. This article takes a look at the vulnerabilities assessed by one national program plan, that of the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation (OAR).

A Changing Climate Means Changing Priorities at EPA--How does OAR plan to address the vulnerabilities in its Climate Change Adaptation Implementation Plan?

EPA and OSHA Can Deliver a 1-2 Enforcement Punch--When one agency inspection leads to inspection by another agency, penalties and compliance upgrades can be costly. This article reviews how the EPA and OSHA jointly manage chemical risk management enforcement.

Area Source Boiler Basics for 2014--According to the EPA, the United States has more than 183,000 area source boilers generating heat, which cumulatively emit significant air pollution including particulate matter (PM 2.5) carbon monoxide, hydrochloric acid, mercury, and trace heavy metals, depending upon the type of fuel used. To regulate these emissions, on February 1, 2013, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published final changes to the Clean Air Act (CAA) Standards for area source boilers (40CFR63 subpart JJJJJJ) that considerably lowered both the number of covered boilers and the regulatory compliance burden for facilities.
