The EPA held a couple of workshops recently in New York City and Edison, New Jersey, to encourage people to get involved in collecting scientific data in their communities.

The intent of the workshops is to educate and develop a corps of “citizen scientists” to enlist the public in collecting a wide range of environmental data. The EPA has stated that the Agency is “expanding its own scientific base and building collaborations with communities that are working to reduce air and water pollution.”

Topics covered in the workshops include data interpretation and use and information concerning monitoring technologies.

Tip: Data gathering and interpretation are convoluted under the best of circumstances. We would encourage area industries to become involved in these community activities to help ensure the accuracy of any data that are collected that may affect their facility’s operations.
