Earlier today EPA released the Clean Power Plan, EPA’s next step in carrying out President Obama’s Climate Action Plan. The plan proposes regulations for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

• Nationwide, the plan will to cut carbon pollution from the power sector by 30% from 2005 levels by 2030, and will reduce pollutants that cause soot and smog by over 25%;
• The Plan is comprised of 1) state-specific goals to reduce carbon pollution from the power sector; and 2) guidelines to help states develop plans to meet the goals;
• There are no requirements on individual electric generating units;
• State-specific goals to reduce overall carbon intensity of the power sector;
• States given flexibility to choose the best, most cost-effective methods to meet the goals;
• States must submit plans by June 30, 2016.
